Is Period Underwear Worth It? 7 Questions Before You Switch

Short answer

In most cases, yes. Kiri period underwear doesn't leak within its capacity in the right size, has no adhesive or insertion, and lasts around two years with proper care, replacing hundreds of disposables. It isn't for swimming, and travelling without anywhere to rinse can make disposables easier.

People considering period underwear tend to arrive with the same handful of doubts: does it really not leak, does it smell after a full day, is the washing a hassle? Here are the seven that come up most, answered against the actual specs of Kiri's daywear and nightwear.

1. Does it really not leak?

Within its capacity, no. The gusset has four layers: a wicking surface, an antibacterial layer, an absorbent core and a leakproof shield. Daywear holds up to 50 ml (about 5.5 regular tampons), nightwear up to 75 ml (about 8.5). Nightwear's absorbent layer runs to the back of the waistband, so it covers flow moving backwards when you lie down. When leaks do happen, it's usually a loose size letting the gusset shift, or flow exceeding capacity — which is why picking the right size and style matters most.

2. How long does one pair last in a day?

It depends on your flow. On lighter days a single daywear pair covers the whole day. On heavy days you'll usually change once, about as often as you'd change a pad. You judge it by the gusset starting to feel saturated, not by the clock.

3. Will it smell?

Fresh menstrual blood has almost no odour; smell develops after it meets air and bacteria. The antibacterial layer targets the bacteria responsible rather than masking anything with fragrance. If there is an odour, it's usually because the cold rinse got skipped before machine washing. See does period underwear smell.

4. Is it hot or bulky?

The absorbent layer is bonded into the gusset rather than being a separate pad, so there's none of the bunching you get between your thighs with a pad. The wicking surface moves moisture off the skin, which matters in Hong Kong's humidity — the breathability explainer covers why.

5. Is the washing a hassle?

Three steps: rinse cold until the water runs clear, machine wash cold in a laundry bag, hang to dry. The only rule to remember is no fabric softener, no bleach, no dryer — those three damage the absorbent core and the leakproof shield. Full steps are in the care guide.

6. Is it worth the money?

A pair costs more upfront than a pack of pads, but cared for properly it lasts about two years and replaces hundreds of disposables in that time. Over two years you'll usually spend less than you would buying disposables, and throw away far less.

7. When is it not the right choice?

Period underwear doesn't suit every situation. Swimming still calls for a tampon or cup. Travelling without anywhere to rinse and dry makes disposables more practical. It's designed to be worn on its own, with nightwear for heavy days; some people still add a tampon or cup during their heaviest hours for extra peace of mind, but that's optional. And if you're soaking through protection every one to two hours, that's worth seeing a doctor about rather than solving with a product.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I wear one pair?

It depends on your flow. On lighter days one pair often lasts the day; on heavy days many people change once. Change when it starts to feel full, not by the clock.

Will period underwear smell?

Not when washed properly. Odour comes from blood meeting air and bacteria; the antibacterial layer and a cold rinse before washing keep it fresh.
